Learning how to get fit takes time and effort, and it can be difficult to find the energy to workout consistently every day when you’re tired from long hours at work or taking care of the kids. However, daily exercise can help with more than just your figure; it can also boost your self-esteem and your mood, help with the battle against anxiety and depression, and can even aid in recovery from substance abuse. It’s no wonder more and more people are turning to exercise to help get back on track, but some may find it hard to do after a long, bleak winter.

When spring rolls around it’s time to start thinking about how you want to get fit. If you’re looking to gain strength, lose a bit of weight, or just tone up, there are several different ways to go about it, and the best are the ones that let you have fun at the same time. This keeps the workout from becoming repetitive and boring.

Here are some of the best tips on how to create an exercise routine that’s right for you.

Exercise as a family

Working out gets a lot more fun when you add in your loved ones, so recruit your spouse and/or kids to join you on nightly walks, or create a family game night where everyone gets to play outside when the weather is nice. Basketball, softball, and kickball are just a few of the fun things you can do with the fam and get your heart rate up at the same time, or you could take everyone to the local YMCA and go for a swim.

Bring back a blast from the past

Think of the things you loved to do as a kid; roller skating, playing a sport, using a hula hoop. These are all great ways to workout! Take something fun and apply it to your exercise routine, and try something new each day to keep it from becoming stale.

You can also go simple and just push back the furniture for a dance party with the kiddos. Make it a theme night with glow sticks and flashlights, and let the kids choose a few songs to get down to.

Use things around the house

If you’re a busy parent, exercising daily might begin to wane after a while. Try finding new and creative ways to get in a workout, such as using things around the house to work your muscles. You can create a simple home gym without spending a lot of money, and this way you can get your heart rate up at any time of day.

Use music

Music makes anything more enjoyable, so make a workout playlist that you can throw on whenever you workout. Include upbeat songs that get you in a good mood and crank it up when you’re feeling extra tired.

Treat yourself

When you’ve had a good week, or when you’ve pushed through a workout despite being tired, treat yourself with a massage, a pedicure, or a healthy smoothie. Giving yourself little pats on the back is necessary, especially when you’re dealing with a busy schedule.

Daily exercise can help you feel better mentally, physically, and emotionally, so make it a point to stay motivated by asking for support from your friends and loved ones. Create a workout plan and stick to it, and remember not to be hard on yourself if you don’t see immediate results. Getting fit takes a little time and patience.
